The Best Kept Secret in Southwark
The Southwark Civic Association is an independent organisation made up of Individuals, businesses, heritage and community groups in Southwark. It was founded to promote the interests of the borough and encourage civic pride among its inhabitants. The association has, each year since 1997, organised the Southwark Civic Awards. The awards are a prestigious event normally held in May.
The awards are made each year on the strength of the nominations you can make on our site, as well as on paper forms found throughout the borough.The Southwark Civic Association receives the nominations and considers if anaward is appropriate. Awards are not normally given to people who are justdoing the job they are paid for, we look rather at what someone has broughtto the community because they are selfless and dedicated to making adifference in the borough. We are planning the 2009 ceremony now and lookforward to receiving a great number of nominations.
The Awards
In recognition of good works carried out in the local community Civic Awards are allocated at 3 levels:
1. Letter of Commendation, Liberty of the Borough and "Of the Year" Awards.
2. Previous categories of Awards have included:
3. Community, Sports and Culture, Enhancing Racial Harmony, Work in the Voluntary Sector, Lifetime Achievement, Environmental Awareness, Public Service, Young Citizen of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Courage/bravery, Woman of the Year
The aims and Objectives are:
- To look at current civic ceremonial events within Southwark and develop new cultural activities;
- To invite, select and make recommendations to the Council as to who should receive Civic Awards;
- To encourage the growth of local Civic Associations and to assist them in developing local awards; and
- To be part of the presentation of Civic Awards
