Recommendations by Baroness Newlove

Baroness Helen Newlove, Champion for Active safer Communities, travelled the country from October 2010 to 2011, meeting local activists, police, council staff and housing officers in order to highlight good practice and better understand the challenges they face.

In light of this work, Baroness Newlove has made several recommendations to the Government and has presented her findings in a report entitled ‘Our vision for Safe and Active Communities’.

Her report can be downloaded from the Home Office Website.

Safety : Issues in 2009 and 2010

Violent crime consultation

The council, as part of the Safer Southwark Partnership is carrying out a major consultation with our residents on violent crime. The results of the consultation will form a key part of the partnership's strategy, setting out our priorities for the next five years. The five year strategy will make the best use of current services, focused on the individuals, families, communities and areas most impacted by violent crime. We would like residents to help us in developing the priorities that will address violent crime over the next few years.

Suggesting of text that could be posted: Tell Southwark Council what you think Help us develop key priorities to tackle violent crime by completing our online questionnair. It will only take just a few minutes to do and tell us what you think about violent crime. Visit www.southwark.gov.uk/keepingyousafe

Met Special Constabulary Recruitment Day

The Met Special Constabulary (MSC) is a force of volunteers who work with and support regular Metropolitan Police Officers.

With the same powers as regular officers and wearing the same uniform, Special Constables are everyday people who are prepared to give up at least 25 hours of their spare time each month.

So if you are aged 18 to 57 come along and see how you can make a difference to your community.

Keeping Southwark Safe in 2010

You are invited to a public meeting held by Southwark Police and the Community Consultative Group on the 26th January 2010 between 7-9pm at Southwark Town Hall.

The Southwark Borough Commander Ch. Spt. Wayne Chance will outline his vision for borough policing for the year 2010.

It has been rightly titled, "Keeping Southwark Safe in 2010" and I am sure, you will be interested in knowing what the Borough Police Commander has to say about your security and that of the borough as a whole.

Please come along to have your say, as there will be opportunity to ask questions after the presentations.

The Southwark Borough Commander and his team will be available to provide further information on Borough Safety issues.

Southwark Town Hall is on Peckham Road, London.
