The South London Gallery

The South London Gallery is a nationally and internationally recognised venue for contemporary art exhibitions and live art events. Located next to Camberwell College of Arts, it is distinguished by its beautifully proportioned, high-ceilinged exhibition space and its location in the heart of a residential area.

The gallery opened on its present site in 1891 with the aim of ‘bringing art to the working people of South London’. It has continued to do so ever since, and currently shows five exhibitions per year complemented by artists’ talks, in-conversation events, film screenings and panel discussions. The gallery has also developed a reputation for its pioneering Live Art programme and offsite projects such as Chris Burden’s The Flying Steamroller presented at Chelsea College of Art Parade Ground.

Integral to each exhibition or project at the SLG is an education programme embracing work with local primary and secondary schools, outreach projects with various community groups and free activities for young people and families.

The gallery is about to embark on a major expansion which will see the development of a neighbouring derelict house into further exhibition spaces, a flat for a programme of artist residencies and a street-facing café. The project includes a new state-of-the-art education studio and events space at the rear of the gallery.
