Theatre Peckham
Although our name may suggest otherwise, Theatre Peckham has been based in Camberwell for 15 years and large numbers of our participants and audiences live nearby. Originating in Peckham in 1985 (then known as New Peckham Varieties) Theatre Peckham creates high quality, accessible, exciting theatre and encourages and supports young people to discover the magic of theatre and to develop their potential as the audiences and theatre professionals of tomorrow.
Over 400 young people (and a number of adults) attend our programme of 37 different performing arts workshops each week. These include drama, musical theatre, singing and dance (Tap, Break, Ballet, Black, African, Street and Jazz) and range from under 5s classes to a BTec First and BTec National in Performing Arts. We offer training in technical theatre, directing and workshop leading and work with Southwark Education to deliver a work experience project with local secondary schools. Theatre Peckham works in partnership with local school and community groups to deliver a range of educational and creative programmes and hosts STEP, Southwark Theatres Education Partnership, working in partnership with them and other Southwark Theatres on joint projects such as the Youth Theatre Showcase.
Each year Theatre Peckham creates at least two musical theatre productions with a cast of young people from the workshop programme working alongside professional actors and a professional creative team. These productions are created for young local audiences and nursery, primary and secondary schools from across South London come back year after year. This Christmas we have Seven Cinderellas>an exciting show for those aged 3 – 93 which takes a look inside the wonderful world of the school pantomime.
Theatre Peckham is extremely lucky to have its own venue, a fully equipped 160 seat professional theatre space, which is a huge asset for audiences and participants in Camberwell and Peckham. The venue is available to hire for rehearsals and performances and we offer technical and other support for professional, community and school groups to create productions and performances and to take part in our Festivals.
